ART

NUKES

Nukes.org

History, Philosophy & Culture of Nuclear Science through my artistic lenses, under artistic licence. Authority defused, confused. Scientifiction. Humor mitigates tragedy.
The internet as art medium. Critical Hypermedia ... link or die.
Review — Dr. Stephen Wilson, Information Arts: Intersections of Art, Science and Technology [Cambridge, MA: The MIT Press, A Leonardo Book: 2002]
http://nukes.org

Museum of Atomic PerMutation

Searching the Semiosphere for information about the effects of ionizing radiation on bodies. Collecting stories about the biological effects of radiation from across the cultural spectrum.
http://nukes.org/MAp/museum.html

Messages from Space

The medium is the message! Would a truly alien intelligence be comprehensible? What does space itself have to tell us? How commensurable/compatible is our rationality, universally?
http://nukes.org/alien/alien.html

Nuclear Rocket to the Stars

Space is sexy. Or is it? (“Space is Death”). Why do we love space? Would it be fun to leave the earth behind? Given our limited means, is nuclear propulsion a good idea?
http://nukes.org/nukerocket.html

As If

My paean to humanism over technocracy. Science and technology are not neutral.

Not Necessarily Nukes

Alien Personality Test

Plays on the mysterious intelligence behind the surfaces of machines and personality tests, the gap between what things are and how they appear to us. Yes, Ontology is unknowable (Kant's "things in themselves").
http://nukes.org/~s2/games/shockwave/AlienPersonalityTest/APT_2000_too.htm

The Real Me

My inner truth revealed (as an agglomeration of popular culture tropes). Yes, I'm a social construct.
CAUTION: This will reset the color depth on your monitor!
http://nukes.org/~s2/games/shockwave/realMe/1TheRealMe.dcr

Truth

"All our separate fictions add up to a joint reality" -H.D. Thoreau
Play on binary opposition. Really, replacing rationalist/idealist categories with social constructivist concepts. Through the action of the user, connectedness replaces absolutes. Everything's fine once we discard the notion of "truth" ... and you can never get back to it once you start investigating it. Situational, embodied knowing v. abstract mathematic logic.
Review — Anne Burdick, "Looking at Writing: Graphic Design Found Mutating, Breeding on Not-Too-Distant Planet," in The Mutant Design Issue: But Is It Graphic Design? (Louise Sandhaus, ed.) AIGA Journal of Graphic Design: 1998 Vol. 16, No. 2

Investigations

A Semi-random Progression of Sound Investigations

Alien Personality Test

1999. Generated sounds vary in arithmetic progression.
Demonstrates: an alien interface; an irrational rationality.
TOOL: Macromedia Director

Stochastic Sound Machine

2002. Generated sounds vary in arithmetic progression.

Equal Temperaments

2003. Generated sounds vary in geometric progression: 2 raised to the 1/N power, where N is the number of steps in the octave.
Demonstrates: the principle of equal temperaments.
TOOL: MAX/MSP
downloadable .zip file | http://nukes.org/math/demos/equalTempers/

Intercalate

2004. Major and Minor modes used randomly; sounds generated with Equal Temperaments.
Demonstrates: random vector drawings techniques.

A Non-Progression of Property Investigations

Digital Objects have properties and methods of changing those properties. These experiments investigate the built-in visual properties.
Analytic tools, some more playful than others.

Monkey Typewriter

This is what I do in my free time; obsessive compulsive behavior?
Play at the edge of legibility, what Richard Lanham distinguishes as "looking at" vs "looking through" [The Electronic Word].
At what point do letters become explicit form (well, for designers, from the start).
TOOL: JavaScript, CSS, HTML
http://nukes.org/js/monkeyTyperwriter.html

MouseSins

A tangent taken, an investigation begun in the service of commerce.
I can hardly begin to explain the import of this example; it's all under the hood.
It demonstrates a method of unifying the command structure for property changes.
TOOL: Macromedia Flash
